Why study Graphic Design?
Creating an effective interface take great UX skills, but it also requires a deep understanding of brand identity, design principles, and a general ability to make things look good. Plus, graphic design helps me flex my artistic muscles!
Illustrator Work
Year
2022 - 2024
GD 150: Logos
Use the basic logo techniques as well as all the Illustrator tools and skills learned so far, to create 4 unique logos. One logo must use negative space. One logo must use a symbol to replace one or more letters in a text logo. Two logos can use either technique or a combination of techniques.
Create designs for swag associated with particular DMC internal events, reflecting the event’s location or activities. These designs must fit well with the item of choice, considering the constraints that come with each item.

GD 200: Album Cover
Using images you collected—and more images if you need them—design two possible album covers that represent your interpretation of the music. These need to explore two distinct visual directions. E.g. one might be abstract and textural, and the other might explore representational imagery. One might focus on a single, powerful image that dominates the cover, while another explores a heavily typographic approach.
Use the Illustrator tools and skills learned so far as well as layers, placing images, and the pen tool to trace over 4 photos. Add typography to at least 2 images to make them into logos (or something else involving typography). Be sure to use a new layer when you move from one artboard/drawing to another artboard/drawing so nothing from the two are on the same layer.

InDesign Work
Year
2023 - 2024
GD 152: Magazine Design
Create a design composition for a magazine of your choice. Your composition should include a cover design and two interior article designs and can be about any topic of your choice. Some examples include art, music, film, travel, fashion, sports, food, graphic design etc. You must include a 1/3 or 1/4 page ad and a pull quote in one of the article spreads, and use InDesign tools such as parent pages and folios.
GD 152: Brochure Design
Create a trifold (3 fold) brochure about your favorite character from movies, TV or books. You should choose a character that you know a lot about. The front cover must include the name and a picture of the character and the title of the work they are found in. Interior pages will contain further information about the character, such as background, descriptions, etc. These pages must contain images. The back page must include a call to action.
GD 230: Poster Design
You will design a poster introducing viewers to the appearance, history, and lore of a particular typeface using only type in the typeface chosen. Visualize the typeface’s characteristics through illustrative use of the type or other method. Include the typeface name, creator, the entire alphabet, and a paragraph describing the typeface’s history.
GD 232: Typographic Poster Design
This project will present a deep dive into grid structures and typographic hierarchy through an iterative, highly constrained, and incremental design of a poster. Using the text provided, design 5 posters with varying grids, using only Franklin Gothic in black and white. Font styling is also limited. Focus on making the hierarchy clear, and use the relationships between positive and negative to make the material as visually compelling as you can.
